A LIFE SPENT CHASING TRAINS

January 2023

January kicked off on a very changeable note, one day bright, the next wet, the next - indifferent, then wet again. On the 4th during the first of two 49 hour RMT strikes this week I headed north to the WCML in the Trent Valley. Quite productive despite the lack of Anglo-Scottish traffc folowing last week's wash out near Carstairs although it wasn't as bright as I expected.

Monday 9th saw the delayed start to TfW's new Cardiff Manchester loco hauled services, with a third LHCS set in service. The three diagrams being:
1W91 CDF to HHD, 1V96 HHD to CDF and 1W96 CDF to HHD
1V33 MAN to CDF 1W93 CDF to HHD and 1V98 HHD to CDF
1V91 HHD to CDF 1W57 CDF to MAN 1V46 MAN to CDF and 1W65 CDF to MAN.

Ended the week at Cwmbargoed for 6C83 and 6V01, the former being a re-run of yesterday's 4C93 / 6C83 which didn't make it on account of flooding on the Rhymney Line at Lisvane & Thornhill. After sitting in the loop at Cogan it returned to Margam via Penarth Curve South Jcn and Leckwith Loop North Jcn. Tried again on Friday, this time successfully.

Wednesday 18th saw the introduction of TfW's 231 Flirts into service on the Rhymney Line, the first nail in the coffin of the Unicorns.

On Thursday 26th we headed off to Marlborough for a couple of days with my father in law in Wiltshire. Friday found me lineside on the GWML around Denchworth and at Didcot.

And on the last day of the month, taking advantage of TfW's Rail Sale of advance tickets I spent the day in and around Manchester / Manceinion riding a pair of tin rockets to Manchester and a bog standard 175 home in the evening. A really good day out.

January 20th, Miskin

I had an appointment in Cardiff Bay this lunchtime but left early for some picture taking at Miskin and Pencoed. 170 208 is on the 2G50 Maesteg to Cheltenham Spa.

  • From the sublime to the ridiculous, the 1W93 Holyhead to Cardiff was a solitary 150.
  • GBRf has drafted in 66303 to augment / replace Chippy on its various steel services. Oddly, after yesterday's 6M30 / 6V50 with Chippy, 66303 ran LE from Margam to Dee Marsh and back as 0M76 / 0V75.
  • January 17th, Abergavenny / Y Fenni
  • Another 150, 150 260, was drafted in to replace the LHCS on 1W57 10:52 CDF to MAN.
  • And yet another one, 150 254, was pressed into service on the 1W19 12:49 CDF to MAN. The signal is off for...
  • ...66303 on 6V75 running to a temporary later schedule which saw it pass Abergavenny early at 13:45. 19 empty BYAs and IHAs
  • Abergavenny Station / Gorsaf Y Fenni
  • January 18th, Penpergwm
  • Ystrad Mynach
  • 231 007 arrives at YM on the 2P47 12:00 Bargoed to Penarth.
  • Lisvane and Thornhill / Llys-faen & Draenen Pen-y-Graig
  • Behind it came another Flirt on the Rhymney to Heath HL training run.
  • And behind the Flirt came a newly repainted 66050 on 6C83 from Cwmbargoed
  • Ystrad Mynach
  • The 231s are very superior units with swift acceleration, decent seats, big windows, wide doors, and an excellent PIS in both Cymraeg and Saesneg.
  • Abergavenny Station / Gorsaf Y Fenni
  • Plenty of custom, mainly students from Hereford's Sixth Form College and College of Art.
  • 67013 was providing the power.
  • My reason for hanging around Abergavenny was this, the welcome return of a mid-afternoon service to Moreton on Lugg. When DBC had the haulage contract, this was quite a common train, running two or three days a week, usually running as 4B35 from Acton. Today's train was 6V37 from East Usk with 66603. The wagons had originated at Theale as 6B91. The days are definitely getting longer when this train is photogrphable.
