A LIFE SPENT CHASING TRAINS

June 2012 - God makes it clear she's a republican!

The first weekend of June was that of the Jubilee bank holiday and as is usually the case for formal state occasions, the weather was pretty terrible, especially on Sunday. Working from home on the Friday I went out at lunch time for a stakeout on the Goblin before heading off to Norfolk for the holiday. In East Anglia only Sunday was a complete wash-out, it rained from dawn 'til dusk. Saturday morning was actually quite bright, I went out to Green Drove between Stonea and March for the four morning intermodals (4E05, 4M29, 4L02 and 4E22). The Fens seemed to mark the boundary between the bright weather of Norfolk and Lincolnshire and the duller, cloudier conditions further south. Although never actually sunny it was bright enough. the rest of the weekend was spent walking, cycling and falling in the water, but that's another story :-)

The few days after the extended holiday saw more wind and rain, on most days it felt more like October than flamin' June. And it's not even Wimbledon yet! I took some pictures on all three days around North London on the way too and from work.

On Saturday 9th I had to go to Hunstanton by train and bus to pick up a bike. Catching the 06:45 from King's Cross I stopped off at Ely for the four breakfast time workings which, in the event, turned out to be three, 4L02 didn't show on account of problems loading and unloading the previous day at Felixstowe as a consequence of the high winds.

I was fortunate that week commencing 11th did see some bright and sunny weather, particularly in the morning which is my favourite time of the day.

On the strength of the weather forecast I took a day's holiday on Tuesday 19th and embarked on a round tour of the Northern Home Counties. It was a most enjoyable day out, topped and tailed by Chiltern's 1H09 & 1U53 with cherry red 67018 Keith Heller still doing the business.

The remainder of the month was spent taking a few pictures here and there, whilst going to and coming from work and a Saturday morning session in the fens. I spent the final Friday of the month riding and photographing the last few A Stock trains on the Met before they were relegated to cover for S stock and for a couple of peak hour extras.

On the final day of the month, Saturday, I took myself off with bike to Bedford, cycling to Wellingborough via Oakley, Sharnbrook and Souldrop, catching the Elstow to Mountsorrel, West Thurrock to Earles and Colnbrook to Lindsey. I also got a complete soaking courtesy of a 'Spanish Plume' shower.

June 7th

After raining all day Thursday the evening brought some respite. Chiltern's on loan 172 on a Barking to Gospel Oak train near Upper Holloway

Goblin172

  • June 1st
  • ...ten 45' boxes from Belgian transport company 2XL (a brand I'd not seen before) passing Harringay Park Junction.
  • At 13:35:33, just two minutes later and 66422 appeared on the Daventry to Tilbury Tesco Express (4L48) with a 1TEU tank up front and the Tesco containers filling the rest of the train.
  • June 2nd - Diamond Jubilee
  • Six minutes later and 66060 barreling across the fens on a relatively lightweight 4E05, last week it was a heavy job, today it was much easier.
  • 66713 Forest City (having not seen this loco for almost 18 months, I've now encountered it four times since March 1st) passing Stonea Farm on GBRf's Manchester Barton Dock service (4M29). The signal is Stonea's up distant
  • At 08:47 GBRf's 4L02 from Hams Hall behind 66706 Nene Valley...
  • ...run on behalf of MSC, and so mainly carrying MSC's rather dull mustard coloured containers. GBRf run three trains from Felixstowe to Hams Hall daily, two on behalf of MSC and one for all shippers.
  • A twin car 170 in old Anglia livery on the 08:00 Ipswich to Peterborough passing agricultural workers who were picking something which looked like a herb in a field lined with polythene
  • 4E22 was well loaded today, but not enough to justify double headed 66s, 66562 was the train engine, 66590 was along for the ride, presumably returning to Leeds for some TLC over the holiday weekend. The guy on the left is operating a battery operated trolley which moves up and down the furrows between the polythene. I rather wish farmers had to put up signs saying what was in each field :-)
  • The pair head the 4E22 through the fields of oil seed rape towards the Dreaming Spires of March :-)
  • June 6th
  • When, at 06:54 a headlight appeared from the direction of Crouch Hill I assumed it was the 4M86. Not so, one of Network Rail's class 31s (sporting a Jubilee Union Flag cluster) on a test train, presumably heading back to Derby?
  • This was why I was lineside early on Wednesday, a rare mid-week morning outing for the 7L22 from Dollands Moor to Dagenham, approaching Ormond Road between Upper Holloway and Crouch Hill
  • Possibly one of my favourite trains, the 7L22 conists of these two axle variable gauge Transfesa flats.
  • June 7th
  • 6L21 was in the capable hands of 59005 Kenneth J Painter, passing U Holloway.
  • June 8th
  • From the steps of the Danubius Hotel, a trio of Chiltern units heading to Wembley depot.
  • It had just about stopped raining when the ecs off the Banbury train left for Wembley.
