A LIFE SPENT CHASING TRAINS

July 2012 - more rain?

District Dave's site on all things London Underground alerted me to the possibility that at least one of the trains in service on Sunday July 1st between Wembley Park and Aldgate was an A stock train. So naturally as the weather remained dry I went out to look...

The following week was characterised by rain and more rain. Despite that I managed a few pictures. On Saturday 7th I spent the afternoon at Kew East, dodging all the showers too! The following week was, if anything, worse so not much picture taking opportunities, just an early evening at Greenford.

July 13th saw us off on holiday, to the Outer Hebrides. I managed a few pictures of trains on the way and coming back but our main mode of transport was by CalMac ferry.

The final weekend was spent in Wiltshire, with a flying visit to South Wales on Sunday.

Wembley Park

From Willesden Green I backtracked to Finchley Road to take my first ride on an S stock train from Finchley Road to Wembley Park. At Wembley Park the train reversed down the hole to the depot, ready to form a service back to Aldgate. The next train to Aldgate is approaching the station from the depot.

  • July 1st, Willesden Green
  • In the opposite direction a Wembley Park bound train passes a Jubilee Line service to Finchley Road, both lines were running an attenuated service on Sunday. The Metropolitan Railway's style of architecture at Willesden Green is very much 'traditional railway' rather than the more avant garde, art deco style adopted by the Underground Group under Frank Pick and Charles Holden

  • I was starting to doubt the report that an A stock train was running, but I needn't have worried. At 16:20 and led by motor car 5189 train 423 approached Wembley Park, terminating on platform 1
  • Like its predecessor 423 reversed down the hole to Neasden depot whilst the next southbound departure approaches from the depot (on the left) and the previous departure (right) heads towards Finchley Road

  • One final picture before I set off back home, a Wembley Park bound train. It was noticeable that on the Finchley Road to Wembley Park section the driver had to restrain the S stock to prevent exceeding London Underground's 50 mph speed limit.

  • July 5th, Camden Road
  • In the opposite direction 20309, 20312 and 37038, all under power, passing Camden Road on the 6M69 Sizewell to Willesden.
  • July 6th, Neasden
  • At 17:38 train 430, headed by 5116 passes Neasden en-route to Aldgate. Shower clouds were massing to my left.
  • A few minutes later 67013 Dyfrbont Pontcysyllte on the ecs of the 18:13 Marylebone to Banbury crossing Neasden Junction. A pair of 168s head west past a string of empty flats.
  • Mapesbury Road
  • An S stock train heads north passing a couple of Jubilee Line trains in Kilburn and the 202 3/4 milepost on the former Great Central.
  • 67015 David J Lloyd on the 18:07 Marylebone to Kidderminster.
  • 67013 pushing the 18:13 whilst an S stock Metropolitan train heads downhill through Willesden Green and a Jubilee Line train heads east. A storm rages over Wembley and Harrow.
