February 2012 - a month of two halves

February 2012 started off here in the south as the coldest month of the winter so far. On Friday 3rd overnight temperatures, even in North London were around -6C. There was no let up in the cold weather as the month progressed, more snow on the following Thursday was followed on Friday by the coldest night of the winter so far, -15C at Holbeach. On Saturday morning in the fens freezing fog shrouded everything in ice.

By the following week the cold weather was replaced by dull, overcast but warmer conditions, not much good for picture taking. The cold and clear weather returned, briefly on Sunday 19th when I went out into the Home Counties to get the 4L48 Tesco train. Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st found me taking pictures of stations - London Bridge and the Gare du Nord in Paris.

The final weekend of the month was both sunny and remarkably warm for the end of February, I spent Saturday at Llanvihangel and Cwmbargoed.

  • February 3rd, London Bridge
  • February 4th
  • Whittlesey
  • In the opposite direction some 25 minutes later 66717 Good Old Boy on a well loaded 4L02 to Felixstowe.
  • GBRf run two intermodals across the fens early in the morning, this is the second of them, the 4L29 from Felixstowe to Barton Dock, Manchester. In charge today is 66708 Jayne, named after GBRf's Roster Manager, Jayne Taylor. It's passing Whittlesea's advanced starter.
  • Beggars Bridge
  • The ice isn't thick enough for fen skating just yet, as 66538 thunders across on the 4E22 Felixstowe to Leeds.
  • Cow Roast
  • 10 minutes later and its the 4M87. I was in two minds what to do for this, in the end all I did was start walking up the field to gain a bit of height.
  • February 5th, Alexandra Palace
  • In the opposite direction an EC HST set speeding towards King's Cross, passing under the flyover carrying the Down Hertford Loop
  • Grand Central's 11:48 King's Cross to Bradford Interchange via Halifax racing through Alexandra Palace some seven minutes out of King's Cross
  • Another inbound train, this time Hull Trains 09:30 from Hull (King's X 12:14), approaching Ally Pally at 12:03. Behind it is a late running pair of 313s from Welwyn GC, which were due at 11:55
  • Finsbury Park
  • Harringay
  • February 7th, Gatwick Airport
  • February 10th, Alexandra Palace
  • It was followed by 66002 on the 6L37 Hoo Junction to Whitemoor engineers service.
  • February 11th, Middle Drove, March
  • Saturday February 11th. The 07:45 from Nottingham to Norwich races past Middle Drove en-route to March and Ely. Unfortunately a signalling problem at Ely caused serious delays, this was the last train I saw which ran on time. Luckily the car was on hand to retreat to.
