A LIFE SPENT CHASING TRAINS

Pick of 2012

2012 has not been a vintage year photograhically, at least not for me. Probably down to the rotten weather we endured for much of it. I did have three enjoyable foreign jaunts, to Finland in March, Northern Spain in May and Chile at the end of September, as well as a couple of decent days out at home. As last year I make no particular claims for any of the pictures, they are just ones that give me some pleasure.

October 1st, Barriles

Monday, just over 100 miles north of Antofagasta was one of the most interesting operations anywhere in the world, the former Ferrocarril Tocopilla al Toco of the nitrate mining company Soqumich (SQM) and their 85 year old GE box cabs which hauled trains up and down the Cordillera de la Costa on 4% grades to and from the port of Tocopilla. This really is extreme railroading. This is the yard at Barriles at the top of the grade, approximately 30kms from and 1000m higher than Tocopilla. 601 and 603 are backing onto loads for Tocopilla

  • January 11th, London Bridge
  • Whittlesey
  • Exactly on time the sound of a labouring 66 could be heard above the breeze It was 66145 on the 6M60 china clay hoppers from Exeter to Bescot.
  • And here is train 269, the Aurora Borealis Express; nine sleepers, a restaurant car, three coaches and five car carriers. One day I'll get to ride it.
  • The footplate on the double Fairlies is very cramped, this is the driver's side. Having just taken over the train from Linda and Blanche Merddin Emry's driver looks uncharacteristically clean.
  • As we reversed back into the Harbour Station the 14:09 from Birmingham International crossed Traeth Mawr en-route to Pwllheli.
  • After a great drive over the mountains via Murias de Parades I arrived in Villablino at about 10:00 for a second shot at the Ponferrada and Villablino operation of mining company Coto Minero Cantábrico. When I was last here, April 2011, nothing moved and the rails looked as though they hadn't seen a train in days. But this time I could see loaded wagons at the washery (lavadero) and the track looked well used. I drove down the Sil Valley, passing through the small towns that dot the valley. This is a Spain far away from the Costas, a gritty upland Spain of small mining communities which struggle to make ends meet. The mines themselves are in the hills, the coal is brought by road or conveyor belt to the washeries in the valleys. <br />

I eventually arrived at Santa Marina del Sil, and sat and waited. No traffic noise here, just the sound of the river and the abundant birdlife. And then, around 12:30, the faintest sound of a diesel motor and the clickety clack of wagons on jointed track. The Ponferrada and Villablino was, for many years, a mecca for steam enthusiasts, it only retired its last steam engine in the 1980s. Today these Macosa/EMD G18Us mix it with ex-RENFE class 313 Alcos. The coal is destined for the ENDESA generating station at Cubillos del Sil
  • As nice as the units were this is today's prize, the most colourful train in Britain? Cherry red 67018 Keith Heller with the Banbury set on the 06:53 from Banbury cresting the grade from Neasden Junction. Lots of Underground action too.

  • As is often the case the Saturday 4E22 Felixstowe to Leeds is used to ferry locomotives back to Leeds for weekend tlc. Today 66538 had 66420 and 66537 in tow as well as the loads of 4E22. It is passing West Fen Drain, which is in need of some weed clearing work by the MLC to prepare it for autumn
  • Whittlesea
  • More train crew than normal in the cab. I wonder why....
  • October 3rd, San Pedro
  • The railway swings across the road again as it climbs towards the 13,000 feet summit at the Ascotan Pass. I think that is the Volcan San Pedro in the background
