August 2012 - summer's last chance?

August is not a favourite month of mine, by and large the countryside looks brown, but not this year! In fact on my journey from Ely to March on Saturday 11th I was not surprised that the Ouse Washes remain under water. But so far August has been less wet and warmer than either June or July.

The weekend of 18th & 19th was positively hot, so much so that I took myself ff to Old Linslade for the first time this year for the pre-breakfast parade of trains, enlivened this Saturday by the Northern Belle and GBRf's two morning services to and from Hams Hall which ran WCML rather than cross country.

The penultimate week and the bank holiday weekend found me in London and East Anglia

West Hampstead

My reason for being in NW London on Thursday evening was to catch the 70015 on the 6L87 cement tanks bound for West Thurrock, here between Cricklewood and West Hampstead. An inbound EMT 222 is approaching on the up fast.

7070015London

  • West Hampstead
  • August 18th, Old Linslade
  • Running slightly early 90049 on the 4L89 at 06:40
  • 06:53, 66536 on what I first thought might be a late 4O88 (Crewe to Thamesport) but which I think was probably an early 4O86 (Lawley Street to Thamesport) as no other southbound Freightliner was seen before I left at 08:30.
  • To complement the 4L02 GBRf also ran their 4M21 via the GEML and WCML instead of via Peterborough, 66721 Harry Beck at 07:01
  • An ontime Highland Sleeper sweeps round the curve at 07:10 behind 90026
  • Another welcome surprise was the appearance at 07:15, routine I was told, of a pair of Cans on the 4M45 Felixstowe to Ditton
  • Things slowed down a bit, it was 07:43 before 66562 appeared on the 4M88 to Lawley Street.
  • The 'star' of the morning was probably the VSOE opeated Northern Belle taking its pampered passengers to Edinburgh, for the Tattoo, with a day trip to Oban pencilled in for Sunday. 47790 Galloway Princess was on point, Solway Princess bringing up the rear.
  • Final train for me was 66055 on a lightly loaded 4M74 Ipswich to Birch Coppice. With nothing more due for an hour or more I headed home for breakfast.
  • Caledonian Road & Barnsbury
  • I brought my 300mm lens with me specifically for this shot, 4M87 behind 90016 passing Highbury and entering the cutting. Unfortunately the line has been built over in the vicinity of Arundel Square N1, cutting down on the picture opportunities on this stretch of the North London Line.
  • The 90 takes the outer westbound track through Caledonian Road & Barnsbury
  • Upper Holloway
  • St Neots
  • August 21st, Three Bridges
  • Upper Holloway
  • August 22nd, Upper Holloway
  • A minute and a half later its 66232 again on Wednesday's 7O81
  • August 23rd, Sudbury
