August 2012 - summer's last chance?

August is not a favourite month of mine, by and large the countryside looks brown, but not this year! In fact on my journey from Ely to March on Saturday 11th I was not surprised that the Ouse Washes remain under water. But so far August has been less wet and warmer than either June or July.

The weekend of 18th & 19th was positively hot, so much so that I took myself ff to Old Linslade for the first time this year for the pre-breakfast parade of trains, enlivened this Saturday by the Northern Belle and GBRf's two morning services to and from Hams Hall which ran WCML rather than cross country.

The penultimate week and the bank holiday weekend found me in London and East Anglia

  • August 3rd, Silkstream Junction
  • ...and secondly another pair of 319s passing northbound 377s on the fast lines. The light deteriorated by the time the 6L87 appeared :-(
  • August 4th, Alexandra Palace
  • August 7th, Cricklewood
  • 70015 running on time passing Cricklewood on the 6L87 Earles to West Thurrock cement tanks. I still can't reconcile myself to the ugly brutes, although they do sound purposeful
  • August 9th, Ormond Road, N19
  • Blackfriars
  • Hendon
  • August 11th, March
  • The LNER design signal box at March South, being passed by a Stansted Airport XC 170.The blue Eastern Region sign pointing towards March must be a collectors item.
  • The barriers stayed down for 66706 and 66732 on the 0E05 arriving in March and stabling for a few minutes in the down loop.
  • They were only in the loop for 10 minutes, during which time no trains passed them, before the signalman pulled off and they headed west towards Peterborough.
  • An EMT 158 passing the east leg of the entrance to Whitemoor on the approach to March station
  • The signalman at March East is about to enjoy the comforts of an indoor bathroom. It remains one of the most characterful signal boxes on the network. The EMT 158 is on a Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street service.
  • Turning round and 66502 approaches on the 4L85, 10 seconds later the view was obscured by the Liverpool bound 158. Despite its much reduced status March is a well kept station, with plenty of flowers tubs and clean paint work.
  • With a few spaces mid train the 4L85 curves towards March South box.
  • Ely
  • August 16th, Mapesbury Road
  • 67018 Keith Heller is pushing the mixed livery Mk 3 set on the 1U53, the 18:13 Marylebone to Banbury
  • 67018 and the 1U53 passing an inbound 165 set, the backlighting catching the MU's exhaust. A northbound Jubillee Line train approaching Willesden Green.
